The plait – also known as a queue – was worn by men in the Qing dynasty. Normally the front of the head was shaved every ten days with the long plait extending from the back of the head.
The hairstyle was compulsory, and some cultural groups actively rebelled against having to wear it.
It stopped being compulsory in the early 20th century.
